Top 10 Purposes For Which Flat Head Bolts Are Used

January 8, 2023 By Amna Aziz Leave a Comment

Flat head bolts are commonly used to fasten a variety of objects. They are available in several different styles, including shoulder, flange, and eye bolts. Often, you’ll need to know what kind of bolt is best suited for a certain application before you can purchase one.

Shoulder Bolts

Shoulder bolts are a type of bolt used to hold together a number of different parts. They can act as an axle, dowel, and spacer for various moving parts.

Shoulder bolts are typically made of steel alloys. These types of materials provide a high tensile strength and may contain silicon, sulfur, or molybdenum. In addition, many of these alloys may be enhanced by surface treatments, such as zinc plating.

Shoulder screws are available in both standard and precision grade. The standard grade is manufactured by rolling and quenching the thread. This reduces the diameter of the threaded section and produces a stronger, shorter, and more uniform bolt. This is the most common type of shoulder bolt.

The diameter of a shoulder bolt is typically 0.002 to 0.004 in smaller than the nominal value. Because of this, the shoulder will often be a short distance away from the head of the screw.

The overall length of the shoulder bolt is determined by the height of the head. The length of the shoulder, in conjunction with the diameter of the threaded section, is the total length of the bolt.

Shoulder bolts are typically installed with a socket wrench or socket driver. However, if a socket wrench is not available, an allen wrench can be used. It is important to torque the shoulder bolt before stripping the threads. This is to ensure that the shoulder remains in the threaded hole. If the shoulder does not engage the thread, the bolt will not hold.

Pocket Screws

There are many different purposes for which flat head bolts are used. Some applications include railing systems, helmets, playground equipment, signage, and paper binding. The type of head used also affects performance.

The most common is the Pan-Head, a small, round shank with a narrow head. This screw is ideal for dense hardwoods. It is particularly suitable for use on 1/2 inch thick stock.

For projects involving thinner materials, trim head screws are a better option. They are designed to sink flush with the surface of your workpiece. This helps reduce the risk of splitting delicate wood. For more modest holding power, a Wafer or Truss Head is a good choice.

For indoor projects, Zinc screws are recommended. They are highly resistant to corrosion and can be plated or coated. They come in a variety of colors.

A pocket hole joint is a very efficient way of joining two boards together. It is much stronger than a mortise and tenon joint. It has been tested in a study and found to be 35% more robust. However, they can be a bit expensive to install. You can either create your own hole using a jig, or you can purchase a specialized bit.

A pocket hole is a hole drilled at an angle. It is formed when a drill bit is inserted into the wood. The drill bit should be inserted at an appropriate depth and angle.

Flange Bolts

Flange bolts are used in a number of applications. They provide an extra surface that helps distribute clamping force over a larger area. They are typically made from steel or stainless steel and are available in many different grades. They can be used with standard nuts and washers, locking nuts and even non-locking nuts. These screws are commonly used in plumbing, automotive, transmission casings, and other engine related products.

Hex flange bolts are also used for a variety of different applications. They can be used in the same way as regular screws and are available in both coarse and fine threads. They can be used in tapped holes and provide the same bonding power as a washer.

They are available in a wide range of materials, such as stainless steel and PEEK. They can be heat treated to ensure stability and corrosion resistance. Some manufacturers prefer them over conventional lag screws. Some offer a galvanized finish to increase corrosion resistance. They can be found in anodized aluminum as well.

Hex flange bolts can be threaded partially or fully depending on their length. Some manufacturers recommend using a lock washer if the nut head is threaded. They also recommend using high strength alloy steel lock washers if the nut is threaded grade 5 or 8.

Hex flange bolts can also be serrated or smooth. They feature a circular flange under the head that has teeth. These features help prevent loosening of the threads. They are often used in plumbing applications, where they help resist vibration.

Anchor Bolts

A flat head anchor bolt is a unique type of masonry fastener. These anchors work best with dense, solid concrete and masonry. They are available in several lengths and diameters, and can be used in a variety of base materials.

A hollow-wall anchor is made from steel and is usually designed to mount to a hole that is drilled into a hollow block. These types of anchors are strong enough to support a couple pounds of weight, and are great for hanging grab bars, cabinets, and bathroom accessories.

Flat headed sleeve anchors are one of the most versatile types of masonry fasteners. They can be installed in a variety of base materials, and are used for stair treads and concrete steps. They are also widely used in door frames to keep walls from slipping out.

When installing these anchors, it is important to consider the size of the hole you will be drilling. Some anchors are designed for shallow holes, but other ones need a larger hole. They can be drilled in the ground, or you can have them pre-assembled with a screw. Some anchors require special tools to be installed, and some cannot be installed overhead.

Depending on the anchor you choose, you will have to use a hole that is slightly larger than the sleeve’s length. Using too big a screw can strip the threads on the anchor. To prevent stripping, it is a good idea to drill the anchor hole with a carbide-tipped drill bit.

Toggle Bolts

Toggle bolts are an old and tried and true anchor method. They are often used to mount cabinets, shelves, and furniture on walls and floors. These anchors are strong and easy to remove. However, they are not as effective in hollow masonry walls. They are especially helpful when hanging flat panel TVs and bathroom accessories.

They are also used for hanging ceiling fans. The patented strap design keeps the threaded bar in place while adjusting the tension on the pulley.

Toggle bolts come in several sizes. A three-eighths inch toggle can hold about 30 pounds. A four-eighths inch toggle can hold more than 50. A six-eighths inch toggle can hold almost 80 pounds. They are available in stainless steel, bronze, and PEEK. They are also available in a variety of head styles.

For example, a socket head bolt features a recessed head. This helps minimize the risk of stripping. The hex head is commonly paired with hex nuts. They can be tightened with a hex socket tool.

Unlike standard toggles, the SnapToggle is a truly reusable anchor. Its patented design allows it to adjust more precisely than other anchors, making it the best choice for securing hard materials.

While it’s not as hard to install as a standard wing anchor, the SnapToggle requires a smaller hole. It also has a sturdier strap. Its ratchet interval is much smaller than standard toggles, so it can be adjusted more easily.

Eye Bolts

Eye bolts are an important component of rigging hardware. They can be used for lifting and pulling, as well as for organizing cables. They come in various sizes and designs to suit different jobs. They also help eliminate occupational hazards.

Most eye bolts have a thread on the straight end, but some have a looped shank on the other side. They can be made from stainless steel or other materials. However, the best choice for rigging is stainless steel. It is resistant to corrosion and can be welded or forged.

Stainless steel eye bolts have better corrosion resistance than zinc-plated steel. This means that a damaged eye bolt can be repaired without compromising its performance. They are available in a variety of grades, including 304, 300, and 316 grade.

Forged eye bolts have a higher breaking load than welded eye bolts. They are stronger than a welded eye bolt but are less suitable for applications where the eye may be subject to bending.

Eye bolts should be installed correctly. They should be rated to meet the project specifications. The working load limit of the eye bolt should be calculated in accordance with the standard BS 7883:2005.

Before installing eye bolts, make sure the holes are clean. The shank should be square and free of debris. The threaded section of the eye bolt should match the diameter of the mating hole.
